ESPA Life: The Luxury Wellness Vision Transforming Skin, Body and Mind

ESPA Life brings skincare, spa therapy, movement, nutrition and mindful care into one refined experience. It is the highest-level spa concept created by ESPA International, a British brand known for natural formulas and luxury hotel partnerships. Each programme supports the whole person through expert touch, healthy habits and calm spaces.

It is not a hotel chain or a separate company. It is a premium concept within ESPA, which belongs to THG Beauty. This structure lets the brand work inside major hotels while keeping its own philosophy and treatment standards.

What Is ESPA Life?

ESPA Life is an integrative model for guests who want more than a standard massage or facial. It connects skin health, strength, emotional balance, sleep, nutrition and relaxation. A visit may combine bodywork with yoga, Pilates, a hammam ritual or guided breathing. Therapists begin with a consultation and shape each plan to the guest. One person may need rest after travel; another may want more energy or easier movement. The goal is lasting balance, not a quick beauty fix.

ESPA Life and Restorative Wellness

Restorative Wellness centres on rebuilding energy and forming habits that continue after a visit. ESPA calls its broad method “Holisticology”, blending modern practice with traditions from different cultures.

Six Paths to Better Wellbeing

The Doha menu follows six paths: Nurture, Resilience, Reflection, Form, Vitality and Hammam. They address comfort, stress, calm thought, movement, fresh energy and traditional cleansing. This clear structure helps staff build a focused programme for each guest.

The History Behind ESPA Life

Susan “Sue” Harmsworth founded ESPA International in 1992, with commercial growth beginning in 1993. Her work in fashion, beauty, salons, health retreats and thalassotherapy shaped her view that skin, body and mind are connected.

ESPA became both a product brand and a professional spa partner. It helped hotels plan spaces, train teams, design menus and protect service standards. Harmsworth received an MBE in 2010 for services to the spa and beauty sector.

The First ESPA Life in London

The first ESPA Life opened at Corinthia London on 4 July 2011. Its 3,300 square metres covered four floors, combining treatment rooms, thermal areas, fitness, nutrition and holistic therapies. It set a fresh standard for urban hotel wellness.

That partnership has ended. In February 2026, the hotel introduced Biome by Corinthia London as its new identity. London is therefore no longer an active ESPA site, but its legacy matters because it established the original model later developed in Doha.

ESPA Life at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail

The active flagship sits at Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail in Qatar. Opened in March 2023, it was the first ESPA Life in the Middle East. The 2,500-square-metre spa covers three floors. Pierre-Yves Rochon designed interiors inspired by Qatar’s desert, sea and yachting culture.

Located on Damsa Boulevard in Entertainment City, it opens daily from 10am to midnight; fitness is open 24 hours. Facilities include male and female areas, a couples and VIP suite, hammam spaces, vitality pools, saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains and heated loungers.

Advanced Facilities and Personal Programmes

Further features include a snow room, quartz sand and flotation beds, a terrace, grooming areas, a Mindful Studio and a modern fitness centre. Classes cover reformer Pilates, yoga, barre and indoor cycling. Personal training and memberships serve both local clients and hotel guests.

Wyld Erth café adds nutritious food and drink. This supports the belief that wellbeing depends on diet as well as movement, rest and skin care. At launch, 19 treatment suites gave the spa capacity for hotel guests, day visitors and members.

ESPA Life Products and Treatment Philosophy

ESPA products follow the Tri-Active philosophy, combining plant extracts, marine ingredients and essential oils. The formulas seek visible skin results while adding scent, texture and ritual to daily care.

The range covers facial skincare, bath and body care, hair and scalp products, men’s care, aromatherapy and home fragrance. Spa services include facials, massage, body wraps, scalp work and rituals shaped for each hotel and culture.

Training and Quality Control

ESPA does more than supply products. Its consultants can assess a market, develop a business plan, guide design and prepare a spa for opening. They also recruit and train therapists, create menus, support marketing and review performance, pricing, stock, guest care and staff development.

Hotels gain a recognised spa identity without giving up ownership. Waldorf Astoria belongs to Hilton’s luxury portfolio; neither ESPA nor THG owns it. The Doha venue is a partnership combining hotel service with ESPA expertise.

Who Owns and Leads ESPA Life?

THG acquired ESPA from KSL Capital Partners in 2017. The price was not disclosed. ESPA now sits within THG Beauty, part of Manchester-based THG plc. The corporate path runs through THG Beauty Limited and EI Spa Holdings (UK) Limited to ESPA International (UK) Limited.

The British company was incorporated on 21 August 1992. Its registered office is at Icon 1, 7–9 Sunbank Lane, Ringway, Altrincham. James Patrick Pochin and Damian Robert Sanders are legal directors. Daniel Golby is ESPA’s Managing Director, and Jackie O’Hare is Global Commercial Director.

Hayley Warman became Director of Spa Operations for EMEA and Asia-Pacific in August 2026. Catherine Wong is Vice President of Spa Operations in Asia. Harmsworth remains the founder but left operations after the acquisition.

Global Reach Beyond ESPA Life

ESPA’s active network covers more than 300 spas in 55 countries. Its consultants have helped design or create more than 500 spas across 58 countries over time. The first figure covers the current network; the second reflects work completed throughout its history.

Partners include Ritz-Carlton, One&Only, Waldorf Astoria, NIZUC, Baha Mar, Gleneagles, JOALI and Peninsula. ESPA does not own these hotels. It provides products, training, design support, treatment knowledge or operational guidance.

Consumers can buy products online and through British retailers such as Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Waitrose. In late 2025, close to 60 products entered more than 100 Marks & Spencer stores.

Sustainability and Responsible Care

The company uses recyclable or reusable packaging where practical and FSC-certified board for cartons. Its formulas contain no plastic microbeads. A dedicated vegan collection includes products registered with The Vegan Society, though the whole range is not vegan. ESPA has also worked with GenM and the M-Tick scheme on selected products for skin needs during menopause. These steps support responsible choices and care through different life stages.

Awards and Market Position

The Doha flagship won Qatar’s Best Hotel Spa at the World Spa Awards in 2023, 2024 and 2025. It is in contention again in 2026. ESPA is also a nominee for World’s Best Spa Brand in 2026; this is not a confirmed win. Its value also lies in consistency. Guests receive a clear brand promise, while partner hotels gain specialist training, tested rituals and a framework for long-term service quality worldwide.

ESPA Life stands apart through expert care and a whole-person philosophy. Its London birthplace has entered a new chapter, yet Doha carries the concept forward with advanced facilities and tailored programmes. Backed by global spa knowledge and THG Beauty, it remains a strong name in luxury wellness.
